BJJ Classes in Clarksville TN — What to Expect at MMAFFC
Most people who walk into MMAFFC for the first time have never set foot on a mat before. They've thought about it for months — sometimes years. They finally made the call or filled out the form, and now they're standing in the parking lot on Fort Campbell Blvd wondering what they just signed up for.
This post is for that person. Here's exactly what happens at a first BJJ class in Clarksville TN at Modern Martial Arts and Family Fitness Center — from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave.

What BJJ Classes in Clarksville TN Actually Look Like
Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a grappling martial art. No striking. No kicking. The objective is to control an opponent on the ground and finish with a submission — a choke or a joint lock — or to dominate position until the situation is resolved. It's technical, it's physical, and it's genuinely useful as self-defense.
At MMAFFC, the adult fundamentals class runs Monday through Friday at 7PM with an open mat following at 8PM. Coach Don Dees — a BJJ black belt under Prof. Matt Larsen and a karate black belt since 2000 — runs a structured class that works for complete beginners and returning students in the same session.
What Happens When You Walk In
You'll be greeted. Nobody here is going to size you up or test you. MMAFFC has been operating in Clarksville since 2017 and the culture Coach Don built reflects exactly what he says on the About page: this is not a fight club. You're there to learn.
Let the front desk or Coach Don know it's your first class. You'll be pointed toward where to change, how to get a spot on the mat, and what to expect for the session.
What a Typical Class Looks Like
- Warmup: The class starts with movement — shrimping, rolling, specific drills that develop the patterns you'll use in technique later. If you've never done these movements, that's fine. Everyone looked awkward the first time.
- Technique: Coach Don demonstrates a technique — usually two to three variations of a position or submission. He shows it, breaks it down, and you drill it with a partner. The focus in the fundamentals class is exactly that: fundamentals. Guard passing, escapes, basic submissions, positional control. Things that work and things you'll use from your first month to your last.
- Live Training: Toward the end of class there's usually light rolling — positional sparring or full rounds depending on the day and who's in the room. As a new student, you won't be thrown to the wolves. Coach Don pairs new students thoughtfully. The goal is learning, not surviving.
- Open Mat: The 8PM open mat after the main class is optional. It's extra rounds, drilling with a partner, or just asking questions. If you want more, stay. If you're completely spent, you're done.
What to Wear to Your First Class
Wear athletic clothes you can move in — shorts and a t-shirt work fine. You don't need a gi (the traditional uniform) for your first class. MMAFFC can work with you on that. No shoes on the mat. Trim your fingernails and toenails before you come — this is standard mat etiquette and your training partners will appreciate it. Leave jewelry at home.
What to Bring
Water bottle. That's it for day one. No gear required to try a class.
What You'll Feel Afterward
Tired. Probably confused about a few of the movements. And almost certainly glad you came. Most people who try a first class at MMAFFC leave with a clearer picture of what the training is — and a better sense of whether it's right for them.
There's no pressure at the end of class. No sales pitch. No contract waiting on a desk. Coach Don's approach is simple: come train, see if it's a fit, and if it is, keep coming.
