Kids Martial Arts in Clarksville TN — Why Parents Choose MMAFFC

    Coach Don DeesJanuary 24, 2025

Parents who bring their kids to MMAFFC usually come in with one of two things: a kid who needs an outlet, or a kid who needs confidence. Most of the time, by month three, they've got both — and a few things they didn't expect on top of that.

This is what kids martial arts in Clarksville TN actually looks like at Modern Martial Arts and Family Fitness Center, and why the parents who train their kids here keep coming back.

Two Programs, Built for Different Ages

MMAFFC runs two dedicated youth programs that are structured separately because a six-year-old and a fourteen-year-old are not the same student.

Little Warriors BJJ is for ages four through eight. Classes run Monday through Friday at 5PM. The focus at this age is coordination, listening, and physical confidence — basic movements and fundamental techniques introduced through games and drills that hold short attention spans and build real skills simultaneously. Coach Don and Coach Kim run the Little Warriors class with the same seriousness they bring to adult training, just calibrated for where kids actually are developmentally.

Junior BJJ is for ages nine through fifteen. The structure moves closer to the adult class — warm-up drills, technique instruction, supervised live training. As students develop skill and maturity, Coach Don will identify when a student is ready to train alongside the adult class. That transition is earned, not automatic, and it means something to the kids when it happens.

    What Parents Notice at Home

The changes that happen from kids martial arts aren't always visible on the mat first. They show up at home, at school, in situations that have nothing to do with jiu-jitsu.

    • Attention and follow-through: BJJ requires kids to pay attention to technical detail, follow a sequence of movements, and apply what they've learned under mild physical pressure. That habit — listen, process, execute — carries out of the gym.
    • Conflict response: Kids who train BJJ develop a physical confidence that tends to change how they respond to peer pressure and confrontation. They're not more aggressive. They're less anxious. There's a difference between a kid who doesn't know how to handle a physical situation and a kid who does — and the one who does is usually calmer about it.
    • Consistency and accountability: Showing up to class, doing the warmup, drilling the technique, cleaning up and leaving — the routine itself is valuable. Kids who train here have a weekly structure that they own. Coach Don notices when a student has been absent, and that accountability is part of what makes the environment work.

    What MMAFFC Is Not

Coach Don has been clear about this since 2017: MMAFFC is not a fight club, and the kids programs are not aggression training. The goal is not to produce children who want to fight. The goal is to produce children who don't have to.

The practical self-defense value of BJJ for kids is real — it's a grappling art that teaches control, not striking, and those skills are directly applicable to the situations kids actually face. But the bigger return for most families is the confidence, the discipline, and the physical fitness that come from consistent training over time.

What a First Kids Class Looks Like

Bring your child in comfortable athletic clothing. No gear required for the first class. Coach Don or Coach Kim will introduce your child to the mat, explain what the session will involve, and ensure they're paired appropriately. First classes are low-pressure. The expectation is participation, not performance.

    Parents are welcome to watch.
